Looking for Ways to Stop Smoking?

October 11th, 2009 | by Jeff Trikoleti |

A lot of people who smoke say they would like to quit, but are looking for ways to quit smoking that will ease the irritability, lessen the withdrawl symptoms, and make it easier for them to quit. There are so many ways to quit smoking products on the market that it can quickly become confusing. If you have decided to quit smoking, you have already made the most important step. Now you need to stick to your decision no matter what happens.

Of all the many ways to quit smoking, there is no one way that is best for everyone. That’s why there are so many stop smoking programs out there. You will need to do some research to find one that feels right for you.

Some Common Ways To Quit Smoking:

  1. Cold Turkey

  2. Nicotine Patch or gum

  3. Herbal Products

  4. Hypnosis

  5. Behavior Modification

  6. Acupuncture

These first two ways to quit smoking don’t have a very good success rate, so they aren’t highly recommended. People claim to have a very high success rate with hypnosis or herbal products, often combining these two ways to quit smoking. Combining multiple methods may greatly increase your chances of quitting.

Behavior modification is one of the ways to quit smoking that has worked for many people. So what is behavior modification anyway? It includes:

  1. Identifying the triggers that cause you to want to smoke

  2. Finding other ways to deal with these triggers

  3. Avoiding places, activities, or people that you associate with smoking

  4. Creating new habits or routines that aren’t connected to your former life as a smoker

These changes will help ease the withdrawl symptoms, while giving you the assurance that you have a plan in place, and help you break the mental connection between smoking and your daily activities.

Something many people have done to help them kick the smoking habit is to figure what it costs them to smoke and plan what to do with the money they save by not smoking. Just think, if you spend $5 a day for cigarettes, after a year you would have saved $1825. You should be able to think of something nice to do with that money, right?

It can be difficult to stop smoking, so prepare yourself by choosing one of the many ways to quit smoking that is right for you. Commit yourself to quitting and get your game plan together. Stick to your decision to quit, no matter what happens. Quitting smoking may well be one of the biggest accomplishments of your life.

    Don’t mean to be a dick but…

Cold Turkey. If you’re pregnant, you aren’t going to want to use patches/gum as they also contain nicotine, which is quite toxic, and isn’t that the whole reason to stop smoking? I hear the cravings never really go away…which sucks, but I feel that doing it for your child should give you willpower enough.

    just stop, now
smoking can seriously harm your baby’s health and that should be enough to make you stop without the help of anything

Shouldn’t you just go cold turkey if you’re pregnant now?? I mean, the patches and gums have nicotine in them which isn’t good for your baby. And herbs and other remedies that you could use probably are not safe to use during pregnancy!!

I suggest you quit now. It will be hard, but keep in mind you are doing it for your child.

Go to a good health food store and get some "chew sticks." They are little toothpicks that have been soaked in different essential oils and are good for people who smoke. They are usually in peppermint or cinnamon flavor and can give you that feeling of having something in your mouth and flavor.

Also, try the herb peppermint. You can get the loose leaf again in a good health food store and use it several different ways. Make a tea or even take a pinch and chew it!

Both of these methods are going to be safe for you to use in pregnancy. Just stop, today!!! You don’t want to put your child at risk!! Be aware that the first 2 - 5 days are going to be the worst, but hang in there as it will begin to get better after that!!

First off, congratulations for WANTING to quit smoking!!

As far as answering, there are a lot of ways, and it also depends on how much you’ve been smoking. The other answerers are right that if you are pregnant, the safest thing for your baby would be going cold turkey. I’m not going to lie… you’re going to have to deal with the withdrawal, but isn’t it worth it for the safety and health of your baby?

For the most part, when you deal with withdrawal, you’ll just have to tough it out, but there are some things that can help cleanse out the toxins and may help to minimize some of the effects of withdrawal…
Drinking water will help to detox, and taking some supplements that work as cleansers may help as well. Specifically, Apple Cider Vinegar, Green Tea (decaffeinated), Chlorophyll (fantastic cleanser), and even good amounts of fiber and water helps some people (although it’s not very comfortable for the lower level of detoxification you get).

All that being said, it’s likely that the symptoms should stop relatively shortly after your last smoke (it’s never as long as it feels like it is). Your neurotransmitters don’t take too terribly long to scream for something they are addicted to after you stop.
Another important thing to note is that no matter how bad it gets, taking more of the drug (and yes, nicotine is a drug) will only make the withdrawal last longer and will be harder on you in the long run. Good luck, and congrats again!

While it is not a great idea to take anything in the early stages of pregnancy, Western skullcap tea will calm the nerves and is safe for the fetus, as is wild lettuce leaf. Also, consider flower essence remedies during this time.

In 20 minutes your blood pressure will drop back down to normal.

In 8 hours the carbon monoxide (a toxic gas) levels in your blood stream will drop by half, and oxygen levels will return to normal.

In 48 hours your chance of having a heart attack will have decreased. All nicotine will have left your body. Your sense of taste and smell will return to a normal level.

In 72 hours your bronchial tubes will relax, and your energy levels will increase.

In 2 weeks your circulation will increase, and it will continue to improve for the next 10 weeks.

In three to nine months coughs, wheezing and breathing problems will dissipate as your lung capacity improves by 10%.

In 1 year your risk of having a heart attack will have dropped by half.

In 5 years your risk of having a stroke returns to that of a non-smoker.

In 10 years your risk of lung cancer will have returned to that of a non-smoker.

In 15 years your risk of heart attack will have returned to that of a non-smoker.

I wouldnt do that if I were you. Salvia can cause more severe symptoms in some cases like panic or just detachment from reality and I dont mean for 10 minutes but 6 months or longer. Salvia no matter what is still a psychoactive substance and using it while having intense cravings and stresses from quitting smoking sounds irrational to me.

If you feel nasty very nasty just after you smoke, then you’re ready to quit. Just stop, forget but remember the nasty feeling. Thats all. Later if you crave too much then just recall the feeling and try to feel what actually going wrong with your body without smoke? Feel empty in your chest?, little whim in your head? is your hands shaking a bit… just try to sense those feelings when you crave to smoke. if you can determine them, then you can easily realize that they’re so fake and you can tolerate them. Goog luck. This is the way how i quit. I used to smoke almost 2 packs a day for 9 years.
