laser to quit smoking?

December 16th, 2008 | by Jeff Trikoleti |

my girlfriend had laser done on her to quit smoking in Bedford Ma.
She said they ran the laser behind her ears, etc. and it worked.
Can you find info about it?

What is Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT)?

LLLT is the application of a "cold" pure laser light to treat certain conditions. It has been used to successfully treat many kinds of musculoskeletal injuries because it promotes healing and tissue repair. LLLT has also been found to be an extremely successful treatment for alcohol and drug addiction, weight control, and smoking cessation.

Is LLLT safe?

LLLT is a safe, painless, and medication-free treatment. It has been used in England, Canada, and Europe for over 20 years with no documented adverse side effects. Laser therapy is a non-medical procedure and is respected by many physicians as a highly effective treatment.

How does LLLT work?

The laser light reached through the skin to stimulate your nerve endings to produce endorphins. Endorphins are produced normally by you and are nature's own mood lifter and anesthetic. The endorphin production relives the physical withdrawal symptoms of quitting smoking and helps keep you from feeling anxious or "crabby".

What parts of my body will be treated?

For the smoking cessation treatment the laser is used on the ears, face, and hands. The weight loss treatment involves the same areas but with additional points on the legs, feet, and torso.

Will the hurt?

No. LLLT is completely painless. In fact, most people describe an extremely relaxed feeling after being treated.

How long does the treatment take?

The treatment takes less than 30 minutes. Your first visit will include a personal consultation and counseling, so you should allow about an hour for that appointment.

Will I gain weight when I quit smoking?

Weight gain is avoidable when quitting smoking with low level laser. Studies conducted in other countries have shown little or no weight gain with LLLT. Lazer Points technicians/study investigators will explain the metabolic changes that occur in your body when you quit smoking so that you can avoid weight gain.

Is this treatment covered by insurance?

At this time, LLLT for smoking cessation and weight loss is not reimbursable by insurance companies. However, the cost of many smoking cessation programs is tax-deductible. Check with you accountant.

Is the treatment guaranteed?

Nicotine addiction consists of two factors: the physical addiction and the mental addiction. The laser treatment is designed to relieve the physical withdrawal symptoms, but will not give you amnesia! If you have smoked a pack a day for thirty years, this means you will be making a huge change to your daily routine when you quit. Even if you experience NO physical symptoms, you will still think about smoking. Therefore, while we cannot make a guarantee, we will do everything in our power to ensure your success. Laser treatment + education + commitment = a winning combination!

Like the smoking treatment, the weight loss treatment depends a great deal on your commitment to lose weight, consequently we cannot guarantee individual results. The LLLT comes in many packages which are designed to fit your lifestyle and the amount of weight you wish to lose. The laser treatment is designed to be an adjunct to your own diet and exercise programs. It controls the cravings, increases your metabolism, and leaves you calm and relaxed. Lazer Points does not recommend any particular diet, as each person must choose a diet that fits their lifestyle of activity and eating. However, we will give you information that can assist you with your program and will be available for consultation throughout your laser treatments.

Are there any health conditions for which LLLT is not recommended?

Yes. Since Lazer Points is participating in clinical research trials for smoking cessation and weight loss, there are some health conditions that will exclude you from treatment with LLLT. All clients are screened and their history reviewed to assure that they qualify for participation in these trials. The conditions that would exclude you from receiving these treatments are: active cancer, undergoing treatments with chemotherapy or radiation, photosensitivity to light, pregnancy, blood clotting disorders, epilepsy, and having steroid injections 48 hours prior to receiving laser treatment.

Is there anything I need to do before my first treatment?

While there are no preparations needed for laser treatments, it is helpful if before you are treated for smoking cessation that you drink 6 - 8 glasses of water each day, decrease your consumption of caffeine of either coffee or sodas, and drink citrus juice daily or take vitamin C tablets. It is also helpful to take a good multivitamin every day to replace the nutrients that nicotine draws out of your system.

Is LLLT approved by the FDA?

Treatments of musculoskeletal conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome, tendonitis, etc have been cleared by the FDA for human use. The laser that we use is approved as a "non significant risk device" by the FDA, however, the treatment of smoking cessation and weight loss with the low level laser has not been cleared. Therefore, Lazer Points is one of over 100 centers across the U.S. who is enrolled in a clinical research trial for both smoking and weight loss. The purpose of the trials is to establish the effectiveness of the treatment with low level laser on nicotine addiction and weight loss. You will be given an informed consent prior to the treatment which will be reviewed with you by one of our approved research investigators. Prior to receiving treatment you will be asked to sign the informed consent and you will then be enrolled in the trial. Once you are enrolled and receive treatment you will be followed for 3 - 6 months depending on which treatment you are receiving.

Is this a medically supervised treatment center?

Yes. Lazer Points, Inc. is under the supervision of Neil C. Boland, M.D. FACOG who devotes many hours to assuring that the treatments that you receive and the manner in which you are treated are both professional and ethical. All protocols are under his direct supervision and he is responsible for the proper execution of all clinical research conducted at this center.

She probably had a form of acupuncture done. It can be performed with traditional needles, electro stim, or lasers. I used to work for a doctor who practiced these procedures and he could also do it with an ear staple….which is exactly what is sounds like. It's a surgical steel staple that is put ito the ear to stimulate certain points to curb cravings etc
