question for people who quit smoking only?

October 11th, 2009 | by Jeff Trikoleti |

how many tries did it take you to quit smoking? did you quit cold turkey or did you use some kind of aid to quit? how many years were you smoking for before you quit? and what was your motivation to quit? also when you did quit how many month did it take you to actually give them up?

i started smoking when i was 17 and i barely quit 1 yr ago (in now 24). i didnt use any method or patches i just quit cold turkey. i never really had a bad craving i just smoked for fun and the occasional nicotine rush. my motivation to quit was watching my close friend and neighbor die from lung cancer due to smoking. they had to drill a hole in her lung to drain out the fluids building up in there. all her family and herself went trough alot of pain during this and watching her with nothing we could do was the worst. and i had a reality check and said i dont want to go through that. it was so painfull for her that i didnt want to experience any of it. plus i didnt want to burden anyone with my debt in the hospital and i dont want my husband to watch me die for something that could have been avoided. that was all the motivation i needed

    I slowly quit, I went from a pack a day, to half a pack to 3 a day, to 1 a day, to 1 every 2 days, to 1 a week, one a month, one a year…Now I have control.

If you light up, what you do is stop yourself, You know you’re trying to quit, so just break it.

    Be persistent though have patience.

    i quit seven times

    the shrotest was two weeks

the longest was 5 years (and counting)

i tried it cold turkey everytime

the most success was to stop buying them, make rules about smoking (in the house, or in the car, for example) and sticking to them. when you force yourself to stand outside in 40 degree below zero windchills, you learn fast to not want to do it.

i also replaced my smoking habit with bad eating habits.

but now that my lungs are clearing up, i might be able to actually replace overeating with actual excersize

    good luck to you!

I was always a light smoker on and off. It was easiest for me to quit whenever I got sick, like a bad cold, sore throat or the flu. I probably quit on and off 3-4 times in my life. Motivation to quit was that it was affecting my singing voice and it smells crappy….and is expensive!!! Quit on 8/22/08 and haven’t had ONE since! I quit cold turkey. It was very easy for me to quit. I finished a pack with the last cig being my last one ever. I told myself, "I am no longer a smoker. I have no need for them and no longer buy cigs." I can’t believe it worked, but it did. Gum helped a lot too, just regular gum.

I have quit - twice. Both times I quit ‘cold turkey’.
    I hadn’t thought about it - I just quit.
The first time I had been smoking for …
about 15 years, give or take… I think.
The second time was about 10 years after that.
    Both times I quit - I stayed a non-smoker for about 2 years.

I quit cold turkey on my first and so far final try. I smoked for five or more years (I’m 22) and I quit simply because I got sick and couldn’t smoke anymore. By the time I was well, I couldn’t stand it but the craving was still there. I haven’t had a smoke for over a year now. Actually, I lie, I’ve had one many months ago but that’s it. I don’t really crave them anymore.

I quit by tapering off over a period of about 2 weeks, then finally stopped when I was down to 1 ciggarette a day. I used to burn holes in my clothes, bedding, carpet, and car upholstery. Most of my friends and family are non-smokers. I felt stupid being around them. I quit over 2 years ago, after smoking for about 10 years.
I also had some pre-stage lung conditions that cleared up after quitting.
I have no desire to ever smoke again. If you really have a desire to quit, you can. Cold turkey is probably the hardest way to quit, try tapering off like I did. Good luck.

I smoked for about 10 years, quit cold turkey, second time quitting,

Sometimes something personal needs to happen. I smoked for many years and then I quit once for a week and said, "well, it is good to know I can quit if I want to!" I then immediately started smoking again. Then, back on 8/9/08, I found out someone I knew (who wasn’t a smoker, but hung out with smokers) had lung cancer. The fact that I was harming those around me impacted me more than just knowing it was bad for ME. So, I quit on the morning of 8/10/08. I used 8/9 to smoke the last cigs I had (I didn’t go out and buy new ones, but I did finish my pack). I haven’t smoked since and I turned to excersise as my new vice:).

Started smoking in 1986-87. Tried many a times to quit which lasted for a day or two. Used to find lame excuse to smoke.
This time its for good its more than a week now the initial urge is gone. Need to take care of that particular timing where the crave is more, but i can feel even that is subsuding slowly.

All the best. smoke free body.
