Teeth Whitening 101
November 23rd, 2009 | by Jeff Trikoleti |
In this day and age, having the brightest, whitest teeth possible has become commonplace. The tooth whitening industry has quickly become a multi million dollar business, with companies vying to compete by introducing new products designed to give consumers the whitest smile in the shortest amount of time. Crest, Colgate, Rembrandt and other name brand companies have all created products that reportedly whiten your smile and give you those pearly whites you’ve always desired. However, while whitening products may seem like a quick fix for teeth that are less than picture perfect, it’s important to know how to prevent stains from even forming on your teeth to begin with.
Coffee, dark colas, red wine and tea drinkers should all take note that these beverages are heavy hitters when it comes to tooth stains. Certain compounds in these drinks work to create stains on your pearly whites, making them yellow and dull. Cigarette smoking also contributes to staining, and those who smoke should seriously consider quitting to prolong the beauty of their teeth. Even the strongest whitening products don’t entirely cover up stains from cigarettes and can leave you with less than stellar results. It’s also important to remember to check the ingredients for each product you’re considering to make sure the product is safe.
For people with stains that simple drugstore products cannot help, there are several dental procedures that can brighten your smile drastically, and increase the whiteness of your teeth – for a price. Those with moderate or severe stains are advised to consult with their dentist about a course of treatment that will work for them. From chair-side bleaching to special trays customized to fit your mouth with a bleaching gel, these dental procedures cost a lot more than typical drugstore products, but will allow you to obtain much better results.
Regardless of your teeth whitening needs, there’s a product or procedure that will more than likely work for you. However, to truly reap the benefits of your newly whitened smile it’s important to eliminate or significantly reduce your contact with stain inducing habits, foods and beverages. Proper dental care is also essential to maintaining a beautiful, healthy smile. If you desire a picture perfect smile, whitening products can help but only if you are committed to the upkeep required to maintain your pearly whites for years to come.
With teeth whitening becoming more popular as Hollywood influences more younger people to look like celebrities it is inevitable the market for whitening products will only grow in the near future.

You can get a bleach tray and bleach from the dentist. You wear it while you sleep so you dont have to deal with the whitestrips 30 minutes a day. It may be more expensive but only takes a couple nights and lasts longer.

I just heard a dentist on a talk show a couple of days ago talking about this. His comment was that the home-whitening strips work okay, but they are a bit harder to control and don’t work as well as going into a dentist’s office for the procedure. The difference is the bleach tends to hurt the gums if you get it on them (and people usually do). In the dental office, they control everything and are very careful He claims you can get ten shades lighter in an office, versus 5 shades lighter by doing it at home. After having them do it, you can maintain it at home with the strips once a month or so. If you have any plastic fillings on your front teeth, they will not whiten as much as the real tooth enamel, and you may have to have them replaced for a perfect match.

crest whitening strips are amazing, BUT you are going to have to deal with IMMENSE teeth sensitivity while using them. In addition, they only really whiten the front teeth as the strip doesn’t reach your other teeth in the back. Unfortunately, your amazingly white front teeth will make your "yellow" teeth in the back appear even more "yellow". having said that, to answer your question, i’d have to say crest whitening strips if you don’t want to spend the big bucks to get it done by a pro.

This is really the only way to make your own teeth very white. I have had problems trying to get my teeth white again through many different remedies and products. It can be quite an exasperating experience. A friend of mine that I had not seen for quite some time caught my eye with her amazing teeth. Naturally I was very interested to find out how she managed to get them so white! She told me about her struggles and how she had eventually turned to an amazing cosmetic dentist, Dr. Robert B. Wolf. He uses a whitening gel combined with a revolutionary light source to effectuate highly noticeable results. I contacted Dr. Robert B. Wolf, had a consultation and had my teeth done. I am so happy with the result. Dr. Robert B. Wolf uses the best of the techniques that you have mentioned. I recommend those that want really white teeth to visit his website, at http://www.wolfdds.com

Interesting! I have tried many pastes, and a few whitening strips but had
only marginal results. I recently found a free trial for a new kind of teeth whitener
gel that is a pen-like applicator.I sent for the free trial and tried it. It did in fact
whiten my teeth. I am now thinking of ordering a full supply but I wanted to check
around for feedback first. Has anyone else tried this?
I found it at http://www.whiteteethsecrets.org
Thanks~

One popular tooth whitening product that you can use is bleaching solution that contains peroxide for bleaching tooth enamel. The bleaching agent in these products is usually carbamide peroxide, which is available in 10, 16 and 22 percent concentrations.
Whiteners that contain peroxide typically come in gel form and are placed in a mouthguard. Some products are used twice a day for 2 weeks while others are intended for overnight use for a 1 to 2 weeks period. If you can obtain the bleaching solution from your dentist, he will be able to construct a custom mouth guard to fit your teeth precisely. Currently, the American Dental Association endorses only dentist-dispensed home-use percent carbamide peroxide tray-applied gels.
In addition to bleaching solution, whitening strips are increasingly being used as a preferred tooth whitening product. For instance, you are now able to get your hands on a set of Crest Whitestrips Supreme from any convenience store. The flexible, invisible strips are coated with an enamel-safe tooth bleaching gel. To whiten your teeth, you simply place the strips on your teeth and wear them for about 15 to 30 minutes each day. After a period of about 21 days, you should be able to see a significant difference on the brightness of your teeth.
